How to calculate a discount
To find what something costs after a discount, multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). An item priced at 80 with 25% off costs 80 × (1 − 0.25) = 60, so you save 20. Enter the original price and the percentage and the calculator gives you the final price, the savings and the working step by step.
Two discounts in a row don't add up
If a store takes 20% off and then an extra 10%, the total discount is not 30%: the second percentage applies to the already reduced price. With a price of 100: 100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = 72, an effective 28% off. Use the “Extra discount” field to see it.
What percentage off am I getting?
In the “Find the % off” tab enter the original price and the sale price: going from 120 to 90 is a 25% discount. For other percentage calculations use Percentage Calculator, and if the price includes tax, VAT & Sales Tax Calculator separates the base from the tax.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate 25% off?
Multiply the price by 0.75. For example, 80 × 0.75 = 60. The saving is 25% of 80, which is 20.
Are two discounts of 20% and 10% the same as 30%?
No. The second one applies to the already reduced price, so the effective discount is 28%.
How do I find out what percentage off I'm getting?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. The “Find the % off” tab does it for you.
Can I change the currency symbol?
Yes. Type the one you prefer in “Currency symbol”; the calculation doesn't depend on the currency.
