Gothic text is the lettering of medieval manuscripts, old newspaper mastheads and metal album covers. Type above to get 𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠 or the heavier 𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈.
A bit of history
Gothic, also called blackletter, Old English or Fraktur, dominated Europe from the 12th century. Gutenberg printed his Bible around 1455 in this style. Today it signals tradition (diplomas, newspaper names), darkness (rock and metal) and street culture (tattoos, apparel).
Light and heavy gothic
Unicode has two Fraktur alphabets: regular (𝔄𝔅ℭ), more delicate, and bold (𝕬𝕭𝕮), more dramatic. Several regular capitals — ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ — live in a different block because they were created earlier as math symbols, so some fonts draw them a little differently.
It's the least readable style of all: use it for one or two words, with a capital first letter and the rest in lower case, the way it was originally written.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is gothic the same as Old English?
Yes, «Old English» is the common name for this blackletter look, although the Old English language itself was written differently.
Why do some gothic capitals look different?
ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ come from another Unicode block, so each system font draws them its own way.
Can I use gothic for a tattoo?
It's great for previewing. For the final design, ask your artist for a real blackletter font with more detail.
