What is a kaomoji?
A kaomoji (顔文字: «kao» = face, «moji» = character) is a face made of symbols that you read upright, not sideways like :). They were born in Japan in the 1980s and use katakana, Greek letters and Unicode signs, so they look the same on any phone.
Where to use them
- WhatsApp and Telegram replies.
- Instagram and TikTok bios and comments, like ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ.
- Discord and Twitch: the classic (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ when you lose.
- Game nicknames, if symbols are allowed.
Discord tip
Discord removes backslashes and underscores because of Markdown. To keep the shrug complete, type it as ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯.
